MEMORANDUM RELATING TO THE BOOKWORK PRINTING
CONTRACT-GROUP 371-374 (1934)
The following explanations of various provisions of the Contract are given with a view to assisting tenderers to an understanding of their application and to prevent any misconception as to what charges will be admitted.
SCHEDULE B
This Schedule has been revised throughout; the principal alterations are indicated under each scale.
SCALE I. COMPOSITION
The Contractor will be required to exercise care that none but authorized altera- tions take place in the type during the various proof stages.
Proofs. Twelve copies of one set of proofs, whether a first or subsequent set, are included in the composition and reprint prices; e.g., if 25 first proofs and 12 revises are ordered, the former would be chargeable under paragraph 23, but the latter would not be chargeable. The rates in paragraph 23 are for any number of chargeable proofs up to 125 copies. More than 125 copies of any set are chargeable under Scale II. The charges have been revised. Proof receipts shall be supplied by the Contractor.
The composition prices now include authors' corrections and imposition. Provision is made for special payment for heavy corrections in proof on a similar basis to previous Contracts. The rates have been revised.
Pages of other than standard dimensions. The method of payment has been revised; for a royal 8vo page set 28 × 48 ems 12-point the composition charges would be increased by 163 per cent.
The standard dimensions have been amended in two cases; royal 8vo is now 26 x 46 ems, and foolscap folio 36 x 66 ems 12-point.
The classification of composition has been altered.
Displayed Advertisements are provided for.
Paragraph 1(c).—In no case can payment for more than a page of matter be allowed in respect of any page. A page containing, for example, over three-quarters of Class III matter and the remainder Class II, would be chargeable as one page of Class III not as one page of Class III plus one-quarter of Class II. But
a page containing over three-quarters of Class II and the remainder Class III would be chargeable as one-quarter of Class III plus three-quarters of Class II. Similarly, a page consisting of one-third each of Classes I, II, and III would be chargeable as one-half Class III, one-quarter Class II, and one-quarter Class I.
Paragraph 13.-For all cancelled matter charged, an officer of the Department of origin must certify that it has been cancelled and is not required for any other work. Lines reset or over-run in consequence of authors' corrections in proof stage will not be allowed as cancelled matter.
Paragraph 18.-The method of paying for reprints has been simplified. There is now a flat rate per printed page for all pages of the same size.
Paragraph 24.-The overtime rates have been averaged. A minimum charge of 4s. Od. is provided.
